Jan] Two men hugged and then, holding each other, plunged off a highway bridge into peak-hour traffic below, in a bizarre suicide pact. One, who appeared to have fallen head first, died on impact. The other was critically injured after they fell about 15 metres off the N1 highway bridge into Rabie Road, Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg. The incident took place at at about 5.30pm on Wednesday. Netcare 911 paramedic Mark Disney was one of the first to arrive on the scene, shortly after police. The pair had already jumped and one was dead. The other, Disney quickly determined, was in critical condition. “I managed to get a quick history from the cops. Apparently they received a call about two guys on the highway bridge. They rushed out, but when they climbed the highway embankment to approach them, they climbed over the railing and shuffled out to the middle of the bridge,” Disney said. This prompted the police to back off and call for assistance and a negotiator. However, the men jumped before help arrived. Superintendent Chris Wilken, police spokesperson for Johannesburg, said little was known about the suicide bid, and the identities of the two could not yet be released as next of kin of the dead man had not yet been traced. He said no relatives of either had yet come forward. Both men were thought to be “not more than about 22 years old” and were local residents. They were not related. “They jumped together and it seems like they were holding on to each other when they fell,” Wilken said.
