Zim unions to hold anti-state protests

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[What is amazing in Zim is that what used to be the Political Far Left – are all now busy fighting Mugabe. In other words the Left is fighting the Left! Isn’t that incredible? I like it. It shows that the left can be broken down. Jan]

Harare – Zimbabwe’s top union body Saturday resolved to stage protests in April against the government over the worsening plight of workers reeling under four-digit inflation, high taxes and a shrinking labour market.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) spokeswoman Khumbulani Ndlovu said the union’s general council resolved to call for a two day job boycott after the government ignored their ultimatum to address workers’ concerns by February 23.

“The council met and decided that a mass stayaway should take place on April 3 and 4 after government refused to act on their demands.

“They will mobilise people the whole of March for the stayaway.”

The labour body is demanding minimum wages matching the poverty threshold, free access to antiretrovirals for people living with HIV and Aids and wants an end to the arbirary arrests of informal traders and street vendors.

ZCTU secretary-general Wellington Chibebe last week described the salaries some workers were earning as “slave wages” adding that their employers could be said to be enjoying free labour.

A family of six needs around 600 000 Zimbabwe dollars ($2 400 about R16 800) a month for basic groceries but some workers earn as little as 58,000 dollars.

The ZCTU leaders were forced to abandon plans for a series of anti-government marches over the spiralling cost of living when police arrested them in September last year.

The labour body had hoped to rope in thousands to denounce fuel and food shortages, nearly 1,600 percent inflation and 80 percent unemployment –which critics blame on economic mismanagement by veteran President Robert Mugabe’s government.

Their lawyers said ZCTU secretary general Wellington Chibebe had a fractured arm, while 29 others sustained bruises and cuts after being assaulted in police custody.

The union members and officials are set to appear in court next month on charges of breaching the Criminal Law Codification Act. – Sapa-AFP
