[Lots and lots of land has quietly… and almost secretly… been taken away from Whites in South Africa. Jan] Cape Town – Land and Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza said on Thursday that the land restitution programme – which had settled 57 000 claims out of 79 000 claims – is being extended by three years. Originally she noted President Thabo Mbeki had given her department until the end of the year to complete the claims – but she told the media on Thursday that there were a number of complexities particularly affecting rural claims to land, including farmers “who are contesting the claims”. Noting that the land restitution programme was being carried out in the spirit of negotiation, she likened the process to buying a house. One might want to buy a house within a month but the realities were that it took longer. Didiza said, however, that the urban claims should be completed within the existing time frame. Rejecting opposition claims that South Africa had not put enough money into the department’s entire land reform programme, she said 3.4 million hectares “had been delivered” by December last year to those who had been deprived of land – or removed from land – under apartheid. External aid from such countries like Germany and Belgium had gone towards “technical matters” while the funding of the land reform programme had been carried entirely by South Africa.
