[I am dying to see exactly how they will do this. Previously, profiling blood on the basis of race (which was a logical and reasonable thing to do), created a furore when some stupid woman went and whined about this to the Govt. Of course… blacks in S.Africa are the most HIV-prone group in the country, and years of tests and studies have shown this clearly. But because this is “racist”… the Govt stepped in and kicked the blood service around. The blood service, on the other hand, have no political or racial issue – they are just trying to save people’s lives by making blood transfusions as safe as possible. But… they were forced… by our Black Govt to come up with another method. I am sure… deep down… one will still find some means of arriving at the same results, but without using the word “black.” Maybe they will look at income, and other things and build a model based on a combination of factors… I suspect too… that it will (a) Not be as simple (b) Cost more (c) Not be as effective as simply sticking to the original racial profile. Chances are… that it will increase the chance of someone getting AIDS from a blood transfusion now. But hey… as long as nobody uses that word BLACK… which rubs the blacks up so much!! Ego is more important than science… Jan] Johannesburg – The SA National Blood Service is to unveil new models for testing the safety of blood supplies which does not include a racial profile, the organisation said on Monday. “On Tuesday we are meeting the department of health in Cape Town… and are going to present some models,” said Prof Anthon Heyns, chief executive of the service. The development of a new model follows a furore last year when it became publicly known that race was among a check list of factors that determined the safety of donated blood and the possible presence of diseases like HIV/Aids. The system meant that blood donated by black people fell into the higher risk categories.
