S.Africa: Black mother shot dead in her sleep next to child

Durban – A 36-year-old mother was shot dead on Sunday night while asleep next to her seven-year-old son at her house in Newlands, Durban, police said.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said on Monday that an unidentified assailant forced his way into the house and shot Nokwazi Shongwe in her head and chest.

Her son was not injured in the shooting.

Naidoo said the motive for the killing had not been established and it was not known whether anything was stolen from the victim’s house.

No arrests had been made. However, detectives were following up on leads and the Durban serious and violent crimes unit was investigating.

Police appealed to anyone who can assist in investigating this case to contact their nearest police station or CrimeStop on 08600-10111. All information will be treated in strictest confidence.
