[When this story first surfaced, it was said that the children were hideously butchered… including the removal of genitals… possibly limbs… and nails being knocked into their heads. The arrested are an elderly black couple and the victims are all young black children. The reaction of the black community was so violent that they set fire to the couple’s home and car… BUT… now the news reports are saying there is no evidence of it being a muti [witchcraft] killing… It is almost as if some kind of cover-up may be occurring here… The blacks, at the time, were very convinced it was muti-related. But… maybe muti-killings… (which seem to me to be more common than ever) are bad publicity?? Anyhow… Let it be said… that the initial evidence pointed to that… What will transpire now… remains to be seen. Jan] Pietermaritzburg – An elderly couple appeared in the Tugela Ferry Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the murders of five children at Molomini reserve near Tugela Ferry (Msinga) over the weekend. The two were arrested on Sunday after the children’s bodies were found in a scrap car at the couple’s home. The badly decomposed bodies had blisters on them. Mabona Ngcobo, 70, and his wife Gwilile Ngcobo aged 65 appeared before magistrate HN Zondo about 11:00, a court official said. Both were charged with five counts of murder. Mabona, accused number two, has applied for legal aid, while his wife is still undecided. The case was postponed to Thursday. The couple were taken back to the cells at the Pomeroy police station. There was a strong police presence at the court as a large group of residents attended the court appearance. The children had been playing outside their houses when they disappeared on Saturday evening. The victims are three-year-old Sisanda Khanyile, his sister Nonzimelelo aged five, and their friends Thabani Sokhela, 5, Simiso Nhlangulela, 3, and Lindeliwe Dladla, 5. The motive for the murder is unknown. Some members of the public allege the crime is a muti [witchcraft] killing. However, police have not been able to confirm this. “At this stage it is very difficult to determine whether the children’s genitals, ears and tongues had been removed, due to the bodies’ decomposing state,” said police spokesperson Superintendent Buhle Ngidi on Tuesday.
