Here™s a story you might not pick up in another paper outside Natal “ this one appeared in today™s issue of the Sunday Tribune:

Girl mutilated for muti while still alive:

A teenage boy and a woman are being held in connection with the killing of a 9-year-old girl, whose tongue and genitals were removed for witchcraft while she was still alive in Ubombo, Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said they found Nompilo Nxumalo at Ezineshe nature reserve near Madlanzi after questioning a 14-year-old boy who was seen with the girl at her home before she disappeared.

“According to the boy she was alive while she was mutilated and was left under a tree to die of her injuries,” Capt. Tienkie van Vuuren said.

The boy and a 45-year-old woman would appear in court tomorrow and charged with killing the child, and cutting out her tongue and genitals to give to a witchdoctor (inyanga)for muti.

She said the boy and woman were not family.

A post mortem was due to be held late yesterday, police said.
