[This is Mugabe and Nujoma’s communist propaganda offensive… to cover up the truth by spreading lies… Jan] A newspaper aimed at countering stories which reflect badly on the Zimbabwean government was launched on Friday. The paper – the brainchild of Zimbabwe and Namibia’s departments of information – will be called The Southern Times after a plan to name it The New Sunday Times was scuppered. Zimbabwe newspaper The Herald reported that Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Jonathan Moyo and his Namibian counterpart, Nangolo Mbumba, attended the launch in Victoria Falls. South Africa’s two neighbours had intended calling the newspaper The New Sunday Times, but backtracked after intervention by lawyers acting for the Sunday Times. New Era and Zimpapers jointly own The Southern Times through a company called NamZim Newspapers. While observers say The Southern Times’s brief will be to counter anti-Zimbabwe publicity, that country’s government is adamant the newspaper “will tell the stories of the two countries from an informed viewpoint”.
