Durban – Nearly six tons of powder used to make Mandrax was found on board a ship in Durban harbour, documented as washing powder and labelled as being destined for Pemba in northern Mozambique, said Scorpions spokesperson Makhosini Nkosi on Thursday. “We believe it is linked to other busts we have made in Durban,” he said, adding that a tip-off had come from Hong Kong police. He said the 5.8 tons of methaqualone had a street value of R650m. Nkosi said the Scorpions seized the powder on Thursday with the help of police on board a vessel named the Songa and that the consignment had come from China. “It appears that syndicates put incorrect addresses on consignments,” he added.
