EQUALITY NEWS : Telkom demands consumer website Hellkom closed down The website www.hellkom.co.za received a threatening letter from Telkom’s attorneys telling them that the site must close before August 13. If they do not comply with this Telkom will claim R 5 million from the owner of the site. Telkom’s letter is available on the website.According to Gregg Stirton, webmaster of Hellkom, most of his information comes from Telkom’s website. It is only clarified in a way that indicate the dissatisfaction of Telkom’s clients. According to Stirton the high cost and low quality of Telkom’s services hamper the country’s growth potential. He also accused Telkom of making huge profits while only delivering basic services. Complaints about Telkom’s service can be send to [email protected]. The public can also state their opinion on Hellkom’s website. Last week the trade union Solidarity entered into an alliance with Hellkom. This follows after Telkom’s announcement of its plans to retrench 4181 workers over the next three years even though the state-run monopoly is booking record-profits and paying huge bonuses to their executives. Hellkom is only promoting the public’s freedom of speech. Telkom’s letter sounds like something from the PW Botha-era. “Solidarity support Hellkom in its efforts to inform the public about the way Telkom retrench it’s workers after they helped the company to make huge profits, Dirk Hermann, spokesperson of Solidarity, said. In the meantime Hellkom will in the future be hosted in Germany due to the high cost of hosting a website in South Africa.
