Jan] An attractive young woman hanging from a tree, a nylon rope around her neck… This was the horrific find of a family, including a five-year-old boy, out with their picnic basket for a Saturday afternoon mountain walk near Mountain View at the weekend. Police believe the woman, still to be named, could have been hanging in the secluded spot of the Magaliesberg north of the city since Thursday evening. Burnt candles and a bottle of alcohol found near a piece of ground that had been cleared to make way for a circular rock structure brought members of the police Occult Related Crimes Unit to the scene, but police have so far declined to comment on their findings. ‘I’ve heard rumours of satanic rituals taking place on the mountain’ “Detectives will make preliminary investigations and, where necessary, liaise with specialised units to assist, including the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit,” he said. Clothed in a black sweatshirt, blue denim jeans and blue takkies, the slender young woman hung from the nylon rope tied to the tree, her long dark brown hair falling over her shoulders. Policemen on the scene were puzzled by an apparent lack of a struggle and the fact that her feet while touching the ground had not left any scrape marks in the soil. Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said a possibility was that the rope had stretched with the woman’s weight and that she was dead before she touched the ground. An autopsy will be performed on Monday or Tuesday. Police will also investigate items found at the scene including the contents of a brown bag and the woman’s pockets. Residents of Mountain View gathered on Amajuba Lane at the foot of the mountain watching as officials from both the SAPS and Tshwane Emergency Services set about bringing the body down. “I’ve heard rumours of satanic rituals taking place on the mountain but I have personally never seen anything and I climb that mountain myself sometimes,” said local resident Pierre Schoombee. Another resident, Mimi Sachse, said her husband regularly walked their dogs up the mountain and he had never seen or heard anything out of the ordinary. Sebola said detectives had opened an inquest docket and a post-mortem would be done to determine the exact cause of death. Police would now focus on the identification of the woman which would help them broaden their investigation. They have asked that anyone who may have information about the woman should contact the Hercules police station at 012 379 2222.
