Uganda rebel group mobilising
Kampala – People’s Redemption Army (PRA) rebels who have been training in the eastern Congo bushes have been trying to mobilise other rebels to invade Uganda, army officials warned on Monday. Army spokesperson Shaban Bantariza said they were aware of the plans because the army has been sharing intelligence with the UN forces deployed there and the Kishasha government. The spokesperson said that the UN forces fought with this rebel group sometime last year, defeated it and disarmed them. “They have been training in the Congo bushes but its not a very serious threat. The three of us – the Kishasha government, the UN and our army – have the capacity to defeat them,” he said. The official Sunday Vision newspaper reported that about 200 PRA rebels had completed training and passed out last month in North Kivu province and plan to sneak into Uganda and occupy several areas inside the country. The paper said the rebels, comprising former National Army for the liberation of Uganda and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) also includes two run-away Ugandan officers. The ADF rebels who were active in western Uganda a few years back before they were defeated by the Ugandan army and some of them slipped back into eastern Congo, were recently reported to be regrouping and planning to launch fresh attacks. Uganda pulled out its forces from eastern Congo about a year ago but some of her forces. Edited by Anthea Jonathan. Source: NEWS24.COM |
