Robert Mugabe the troubled president of Zimbabwe has unleashed dogs of terror to scare his bubbling opponent Morgan Tsvangirai back into the political cocoon a situation that saw the cancelled star rally of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) turning into sporadic exchange of missiles and tear smoke in the high density suburb of Highfields, it has been established.
According to senior police detail at the Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) all units have been armed and dispatched to strategic positions to quell any unsuspecting disturbance triggered by Zimbabwe's oppositions departments within the political sphere.
Thursday' s surprise demonstration by MDC and NCA that saw trigger-happy police details fighting running battles with tar-marking demonstrators exposed the loose ends of the law enforcement agents.
Three police details were injured one seriously during the demonstrations a situation that caused an indiscriminate assault of innocent people especially in Harare's central business district.
It has become customary that police are not allowing gatherings of more than three people as it is mistaken for an informal meeting to plot the unseating of ZANU PF from power by opposition forces.
An eyewitness at the fourth street's bus terminus said people are being assaulted by the heavily armed riot police. Some are being picked up and destined to unknown place of torture.
According to an official in the ministry of home affairs riot police had been instructed to deal crudely with any suspicious civilians even it means maiming them.
He also confirmed that the minister of home affairs Kembo Mohadi had an impromptu meeting with President Mugabe to appraise and assure him that his dogs of terror were ready to contain any dissent from the restive masses.
Mohadi was also advised to approach the army if the situation gets out of hand.
Highfields the weekend political hotbed that saw MDC clashing with the trigger-happy errand forces had also been declared a cantonment area causing shivers even to bona fide residents of that suburb.
In an interview with the Anti-Senate MDC faction spokesperson Nelson Chamisa he said that the opposition party would not rest until democracy dawns in the country and fighting running battles with the police will only spice up their thorny road to victory.
“The police had refused us clearance to hold the rally saying they were short of manpower so where did all those riot police details with tankers from Israel come from,” he said. “It just showed how scared Mugabe is of Tsvangirai.”
More than 15 000 MDC supporters came to attend the rally, which was not to be as the police had set an ambush to waylay the MDC leadership.
Hundreds of people were affected by tear smoke while almost 130 were arrested in Highfields.
The police spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena could neither confirm nor deny that the police were to blame for the pandemonium that rocked the oldest suburb in Harare.
A source privy to the roadmap of the MDC rally has confirmed that the MDC leadership under the helmship of Morgan Tsvangirai had planned to spice up their star rally by taking the long march from Zimbabwe grounds into the city centre to register their discontent of the socio-economic and political decay that pushed Zimbabwe into a pariah state.
