I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Scientists Hit Back At Mbeki With Shock Aids Figures

[Mbeki lies through his teeth about most things – most especially: AIDS and Zimbabwe. Jan]

New research by the Medical Research Council points to an “unabated” rise in the number of adult deaths due to HIV/AIDS, despite a recent claim by President Thabo Mbeki that SA did not have the statistics to show how many people were dying in the epidemic.

As a result of Mbeki’s controversial remarks in a television interview after his state of the nation address, scientists have submitted new data to the South African Medical Journal (SAMJ) showing that the proportion of recorded deaths among young and sexually active adults has risen sharply over the past six years.

The research builds on an earlier report by the council on the effect of HIV/AIDS on adult mortality, which was controversially leaked to the media in 2001 amid allegations that government was trying to suppress its finding that SA had undergone a rapid change in the pattern of deaths amongst different age groups as a result of the epidemic.

The researchers estimated then that in 2000, HIV/AIDS accounted for 40% of deaths among people aged 15-49.

Mbeki’s spokesman, Bheki Khumalo, refused to be drawn on the death statistics issue yesterday, saying only that SA had the most comprehensive HIV/AIDS strategy on the continent and that government planned to spend R12bn over the next three years to combat the disease.

In the latest study, researchers have steered away from the sensitive issue of estimating the number of AIDS deaths, and have simply presented the raw data.

Researchers found that the total number of deaths on the population register had risen 68% over the past six years, from 272000 in 1998 to 457000 in 2003. The study’s lead author, Debbie Bradshaw, said that the increase could not be accounted for solely by population growth and improved reporting.

Taking these factors into account, the researchers found a 44% increase in adult deaths.

Their work suggests HIV/AIDS is taking a devastating toll among women. They found a 168% increase in deaths among women aged 20-49.

The research is undergoing peer review by the SAMJ.

Bradshaw emphasised that AIDS was under-reported as the cause of death on death certificates, and further analysis was needed to estimate the numbers of deaths due to various causes, including AIDS.

AIDS deaths were under-reported, she said, due to the stigma attached to the disease and difficulties of making a diagnosis of AIDS without blood tests.
