S.Africa: Newsflash: Sandton Square to be renamed…
I got this bit of info from someone who was involved in this… Sandton is a very upmarket part of Johannesburg – its where all those rich liberal whites are who helped the ANC come to power. A lot of those people are no longer quite so enthralled with the ANC!
Anyway, Sandton Square is to be renamed: Nelson Mandela Square.
A 3m high statue of Mandela was apparently donated by foreign (US?) donors. Apparently it has already been announced on the quiet – but a bigger campaign to make the public aware of this will take place in the coming weeks. (So far, I’ve not seen this on any of the South African news sites). [Jan]
