S.Africa: Gang kills 93-year-old shopkeeper – others injured
Police have launched a manhunt for three men who shot and killed a 93-year-old Laudium shopkeeper and a young assistant on Sunday night during a robbery.
As police search for the gang, the shopkeeper’s 65-year-old wife is lying seriously injured in a city hospital.
The couple were closing their shop when the three men, one of whom was armed with a pistol, forced their way into the shop.
Police said the men began beating the woman, before turning on her husband, Gandhi Babu Earsotam, as he tried to rescue her.
Police spokesman Inspector Anton Breedt said as Earsotam ran to help his wife one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.
During the shooting a 20-year-old neighbour ran out to help the couple after hearing screams.
“As he ran into the shop the gunman turned on him and opened fire, shooting him in the head,” said Breedt.
He said that by the time police arrived at the scene the tuckshop owner had died. The injured neighbour was rushed to a local hospital where he died.
“Detectives are investigating the shootings and following up on information which will reveal the whereabouts of the killers, who fled moments after the attack,” said Breedt.
The motive for the shooting was believed to be robbery, but at this stage it was still unclear as nothing had been taken in the attack. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the local police station. – Crime Reporter.
