S.Africa: 8 Murderers escape from court
[Note. Escaping from custody is quite easy in South Africa. In this case somebody just unlocked the door and let them out. Simple huh? Jan]
Pretoria – Eight men awaiting trial on charges of murder, housebreaking and armed robbery escaped from the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday, the city’s police said.
The eight and several others were being held in a cell underneath courtroom number 10, where they were expected to appear later, said Inspector Anton Breedt.
At about 11:00 some of the prisoners who had already appeared before magistrates were taken from this cell by a police guard and court orderlies to a different one, from where they would either be transported back to prison or be released after paying bail or fines.
When the guard and the orderlies returned to the first cell, they found the door unlocked. The key used was found in the dock in the courtroom.
Four other prisoners had chosen to remain behind, Breedt said.
