S.Africa: Man Shot Dead & Wife Raped for a TV

Pietermaritzburg – A 24-year-old man was shot dead and his 22-year-old wife abducted and raped in Esigoni, Plessislaer, by a robber who took only a television set, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.
Inspector Les Botha said the young couple were asleep on Saturday when they heard someone trying to enter the house in the suburb, a few kilometres west of Pietermaritzburg.
On asking who it was, they were told that it was a police officer and that they should open the door.
When the man opened the door he was shot, almost at point-blank range, Botha said. The woman was ordered, at gunpoint, to unlock the security gate, while her husband lay dying at her feet.
The man stole a television set and, still brandishing his firearm, forced the woman to accompany him. When they reached a nearby footpath, he raped her.
Afterwards he fled and the woman returned home to find her husband dead.
Police cannot name the deceased, because this would reveal the rape victim’s identity.
