S.Africa: Asmal rejects "malicious" election claims

[Note. Deny, deny, deny. Well, its an election year, and its going to be 10 years after Apartheid, and the ANC no doubt wants to convince everyone that we’ve made progress in the last 10 years. Jan]

Education Minister Kader Asmal has strongly rejected a suggestion that this year’s improved matric results are intended to bolster the African National Congress’s re-election chances.

But most opposition parties steered away from electioneering comments, with the Democratic Alliance expressing only a “suspicion” about the improved results in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.

Asmal said people should do their homework before making “malicious” statements.

There was also no truth to statements that the results would serve the ruling party better in its election campaign.

‘Opposition parties steered away from electioneering comments’
DA spokesperson Willem Doman said the party was “suspicious” of the margin of the improvement in results in the Eastern Cape and Free State.

Next year the DA would launch a campaign to encourage greater openness in the exam moderation process. Pupils, parents, businesses and trade unions and the wider community should know the criteria for marking, making the pass rates less controversial, Doman said.

But the DA was “encouraged” that this year’s exams were conducted with greater integrity and “teaching departments and school heads deserve praise for all the steps they took to achieve this”.

Asmal said the improvement in results for the two provinces was due in part to greater involvement by teachers, parents and governing bodies, winter school programmes and other interventions by the education department.

The ANC congratulated matrics, their parents and teachers for the improved pass rate.

The Inkatha Freedom Party also congratulated matrics, saying passing was a significant step in their lives. it promised to work towards an economy that provided jobs. – Political Bureau.
