High Powered Chinese Business Interest in Zimbabwe
[Note. Mugabe’s old sponsors – the Chinese – back to take a look.
When he first came to power, thousands of Chinese came to Zimbabwe. My mother was there at the time and told me about it. They got lots of contracts there. The Chinese maintain a stong interest in Africa – including South Africa. Take a look at the last statement in this article re: Zimbabwe trade with China since independence. Mugabe has also bought military equipment from China since 2000. Jan]
A HIGH-POWERED Chinese business delegation is expected to visit Zimbabwe this week to explore business opportunities particularly in the mining sector.
The delegation, which comprises the chairman of the Shougang International Engineering Company, Mr Zhu Jimin and vice president Mr Hu Bin, will visit the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company Limited (Zisco).
A Ziscosteel official, Mr Augustine Timbe, said the delegation would be accompanied by the Minister of Industry and International Trade, Dr Samuel Mumbengegwi.
“The delegation will tour various sections of the mine including the state-of-the art blast furnace number four.
“The Chinese officials will also hold technical discussions with Zisco management on the performance of the integrated steelworks,” he said.
Ziscosteel has already been granted a US$42 million by the Export and Import Bank of China to increase its operations.
Mr Timbe said the visit was a follow up to an invitation extended by Dr Mumbengegwi last year during a visit to Shougang production plant in Beijing.
Several other Chinese businessmen have in the past few months visited Zimbabwe to explore business opportunities.
Most of the visitors have shown an interest in the mining sector.
Among some of the visitors is the Shanghai Baosteel Company, which has expressed an interest in ferro-chrome production in the country. The company is yet to resume operations.
Trade relations between Zimbabwe and China has grown since independence rising in recent years to at least US$168 million.
Zimbabwe imports goods such as machinery, textiles, grain, clothing, light industry goods and electronic gadgets from China.
On the other hand, China is a major importer of Zimbabwean tobacco.
