Mozambique ex-rebels win Beira
[Note. If free and fair elections had ever been held in Mozambique since the Marxist Frelimo seized power in 1975 – then RENAMO – the pro-Western “rebels” would have been ruling that country – for the better. It is good to see they won the recent elections in the port city of Beira. But I doubt there are truly free and fair elections in that country. Jan]
Maputo – Mozambique’s former rebel Renamo movement has won municipal elections in Mozambique’s second largest city of Beira, according to the country’s provincial elections commission.
The Mozambique National Resistance movement (Renamo) took 54,6 percent of the vote while its mayoral candidate, Davis Simango, won 53,4 percent of votes, the commission announced late on Wednesday.
The ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and its candidate Jalma Lourenco came second with 41,2 percent and 42,03 percent respectively the commission said.
The Institute for Peace and Development (Ipade) party of former Renamo number two, Raul Domingos, took only three percent of the vote in Beira.
Compilation of the final results in the city, which is traditionally a Renamo stronghold, hit a snag earlier this week after last-minute allegations of irregularities by the former rebel group.
Renamo was one of more than 15 political parties that contested the November 19 elections held in 33 constituencies in the southeast African country.
It waged a 16-year civil war against Frelimo, but a 1992 peace deal saw it transformed into a political party.
