ICC"s collusion with Zimbabwean Police
The following is a Press Statement by Organised Resistance, a new group in Zimbabwe:-
The ICC’s collusion with the brutal Zimbabwe Republic Police Force
is repugnant
Organised Resistance condemns the persistent disrespectful and
nae(175)¯ve attitude adopted by Mr Malcom Speed, the ICC Executive Director.
In the last two weeks Zimbabweans have experienced an upsurge of violence and intimidation initiated by Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe Republic Police Force (ZRP).
This has included the illegal detention of the Executive Mayor of Harare; the illegal detention and assault of civic activists; the arrest and torture of an MDC Member of Parliament and the torture of a human rights lawyer.
During Mr Speed’s visit to Zimbabwe he chose yet again to meet only with the politicised and partisan Zimbabwe Republic Police Force (ZRP) and representatives of four diplomatic missions.
Can Mr Speed explain why he did not meet with the Mayor of the capital city of Zimbabwe where a series of world cup cricket matches will be played?
That Mr Speed and the Zimbabwe Cricket Union take comfort in the reassurances of a police force that brutalises Zimbabweans is repugnant. The ICC is aggravating an already tenuous situation in Zimbabwe by legitimising a violent regime through engaging them as key stakeholders in law enforcement surrounding the world cup.
There is no doubt that Zimbabwean human rights activists will be assaulted, tortured and arrested during the world cup. And the ICC will have to acknowledge and take responsibility for their collusion in these human rights abuses.
Across the road from the Australian High Commission, human rights lawyer, Gabriel Shumba is in a private clinic recovering from being tortured by the secret police. Whilst Mr Speed was being wined and dined on Wednesday night, 22nd January a group of civic activists were sitting in police cells without food or adequate access to legal representation.
The recent violent suppression of activists is testament to the Mugabe regime’s political investment in the world cup taking place in Zimbabwe.
Mr Speed once more has blatantly shirked his responsibilities and has refused to meet with a broad cross section of civic representatives in order to gain clarity and insight on the security situation in Zimbabwe. By doing this, Mr Speed is putting the safety of international cricket players and officials at serious risk. And Zimbabweans will continue to be victimised because of the ICC’s insistence that the cricket matches be played in Zimbabwe.
Organised Resistance remains committed to stopping the games. Mr Speed will regret his failure to heed the clear warning signs that Zimbabwe be boycotted as a world cup cricket venue.
It’s not a game anymore.
