Mugabe"s Secret Plan
Exposed! By our own Staff: MDC intelligence have allegedly unearthed a Zanu PF plot to implicate the opposition leadership in a stage-managed invasion of the country by militia posing as opposition-sponsored terrorists, MDC president, Morgan Tsvangirai, has said. Tsvangirai, the ultimate target of the plot, revealed to The Standard last week that his party had gathered information to the effect that the ruling party had, with the use of state machinery, devised a plan to stage-manage a terrorist invasion of the country that would result in the entire MDC leadership being jailed under trumped up treason charges. Tsvangirai’s claims come at a time when military sources had already informed The Standard about some mobilisation of ZNA troops along the country’s borders, particularly the one with Mozambique. An unspecified number of Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) members had been put on standby, the sources claimed. Said Tsvangirai: “We have information that they (Zanu PF) want to implicate us and lock us up for good. We are quite aware of the sinister plot which is meant to undermine the non-violent and democratic struggle
of the MDC. “Our intelligence tells us that plans are afoot to destabilise the MDC through pseudo operations involving stage-managed invasions by so-called MDC supporters and to then implicate the MDC leadership in these ‘invasions’. The government wants to destroy the MDC by hook and by crook. But they should know that we have all the details of the operation,” said Tsvangirai. “The international community is already aware of the plot. We have said we are committed to the constitutional path of removing this government and will not do so through some armed adventures. But you should be aware that such desperate regimes as Mugabe’s can resort to these kind of tactics. The Standard is informed that Zimbabwean troops have of late been spotted crossing into Mozambique on reconnaissance missions. According to information made available to this paper, ruling party militia, disguised as MDC dissidents, were preparing to stage-manage an invasion of the country from Gorongoza, the former command centre for MNR dissidents in Mozambique which was destroyed by the ZNA some years ago. “Alert” Zimbabwean security details would then arrest them in Mutare from where they would lead the police to more members of the gang who, according to the plot, would be based at Gorongoza and elsewhere in Harare. After their arrest, the militia, most of whom have infiltrated the opposition, would then implicate the MDC leadership, it is alleged. According to the details, the arrests would be used to justify a declaration of a state of emergency by President Mugabe which would see the army descend on the country’s urban centres in a short but bloody campaign aimed at obliterating the MDC. Contacted for comment, Zanu PF spokesman, Dr Nathan Shamuyarira, refused to respond to the allegations and instead accused Tsvangirai of abusing the private press to make “all sorts of allegations”. “I don’t even want to hear the allegations he is making. You support him and you want me to comment on the allegations so that they become credible. Go ahead and print whatever you want. Don’t even say you talked to me because that will give your story credibility,” said Shamuyarira. However, several soldiers who spoke to The Standard confirmed that they were being psyched up for battle as they were being told by their superiors that the country was about to be invaded by MDC terrorists backed by western countries led by Britain. The Standard also managed to talk to some wives of soldiers currently stationed in Mutare who complained of having no access to their husbands. “I telephoned the Mutare base and asked to speak to my husband but I was told I could not speak to him as he and others were on patrol at the border. I told them that it was urgent as I wanted him to come and attend to our sick child, but they told me that would be impossible as he was too busy at the border. To me that sounded strange because normally, they allow him to come if there’s a family emergency,” said one woman whose husband is based in an eastern border town. Tsvangirai is currently facing treason charges emanating from an alleged plot believed to have been masterminded by Ari Ben Menashe, an Israeli intelligence operative.
However, press reports indicate that Menashe has signalled that he is no longer interested in the case.
