Father Rapes own child to death

Baby rape is back with a vengeance. Many months ago when this first hit the news headlines
the South African Government was very embarrassed by it. They tried to explain it away as
“a legacy of Apartheid”! The so-called “logic” used by Vice President Zuma was
that men were conditioned into using violence due to Apartheid! The joke is there never
were such incidents ever during that time! Anyway, the baby rapists are either black or
coloured men.

The last several weeks baby raping has made a comeback with quite a vengeance. The most
outrageous happening recently was when a 23 year old father raped his own 5 month old baby
and she died from the injuries thus sustained.

According to a report in THE STAR newspaper some months back, the head of Police has a video
tape actually showing a man having sex with a baby and the cries of the baby can be heard
clearly.

All this is of course due to the superstitious belief that sex with a child cures you of
AIDS. Recent statistics show that 40% of all deaths in South Africa are due to AIDS. A
recent news report in South Africa states that prison gangs are now getting HIV positive
inmates to rape others as a punishment using a procedure they call “slow puncture”.

This week I got a call from the President of the NMDC (National Movement for Democratic
Change). He wants to meet me. His is an organisation of young Zulus who are sick to death
of the ANC [African National Congress] government. They want to take them on in the next
elections. They feel that the Zulus have no voice.

The ANC is dominated by the Xhosa tribe, where Nelson Mandela is a chief. So one sees some
tribalism rearing its head.

A group of Afrikaner intellectuals issued a statement recently after the bombings in Soweto
saying that white people, especially Afrikaners are feeling alienated and that there is no
place for them in South Africa.

This week I attended a meeting of the CZA (Concerned Zimbabweans Abroad), in Sandton, where
I was one of the speakers. As happens so often in this part of the world, people feel very
despondent and getting a grass roots organisation going for any reason (no matter how good)
is an extremely difficult task. I think it is because over the decades, so many foreign
countries have intervented here in Africa, that white people living here feel that anything
they do is pointless and so people rather just look after themselves.

The President of the CZA, Jay Sibanda, told of two protests he held recently, one in Sandton,
Johannesburg and the other at the Union Buildings (our Parliament) in Pretoria. At these
protests he had big banners up which read “Hoot if you want Mugabe to go” and “Hoot if you
want Mbeki to act on Zimbabwe”. Since this is a hot issue in South Africa, there was of course
a tremendous amount of hooting going on since the vast majority of people in this country
(of all races), hate Mugabe.

It was therefore something of a joke that purely by accident, President Mbeki drove up to
the Union Buildings during the protest and his motorcade drove right under the banner
which said “Hoot if you want Mbeki to act on Zimbabwe”. On that day, Mbeki was meeting
with the ambassadors of several countries and they too ended up driving under the CZA banner.
No doubt this was an embarrassment to Mbeki!

One of the speakers at the CZA meeting was a black school teacher who told of how he had
become involved in political activities against Robert Mugabe. He had now fled to South
Africa for fear of his life. He had joined the MDC [Movement for Democratic Change] and had
been elected successfully in a certain constituency. But then Mugabe got to hear of the
anti-Mugabe sentiments in this area and decided to punish the people. He would start at the
top, with this elected MDC official and work his way down. One day this official woke up to
find his house surrounded by 70 soldiers who asked him “Where are the arms of war?” He had
no arms of war. But that did not stop them from torturing him until he was unconscious.
He was arrested and thrown in prison for 3 weeks and his wife was arrested too. Friends had
to take care of their children while they were in prison. Then Mugabe’s “War Vets” petrol-bombed
two of his cars and destroyed his property. They also stole his 15 head of cattle and killed
them and ate them all.

He told of how Mugabe rigged elections and allowed some people to vote several times, while,
at other places he put up secret polling stations which the opposition political parties
did not know about!!

This man eventually fled from Zimbabwe because his life was in danger and he is now seeking
political asylum in South Africa.

The black Zimbabweans have been telling me for weeks, that there are photos of an instance
where Mugabe’s troops/War Vets tied wire or cord around a man’s genitals and ripped them off.
They tell me these photos exist, and a black Zimbabwean in Johannesburg has them, but he
wants money before he will hand them over, and they do not have the money to pay him for this.
This is a story I have heard a lot about from several of them.

After the meeting, I met many of the black Zimbabweans and we sat and chatted. They were all
unanimous in their view that the only way to get Mugabe out was through war. They said there
was no other way. Even the women, who normally do not like such talk, were all in favour of
it. Indeed, the mention of raising an army against Mugabe immediately caused them to break
out in huge smiles. There was nothing they would love more! It would be a dream come true!

I explained to them, that President Mbeki of South Africa would never allow us to take action
against Zimbabwe, and I know of Zimbabweans who are engaged in high-level diplomacy in South
Africa, trying to get the ANC to change its mind. So far, all the feedback I have been getting
has been negative.

At the CZA meeting, everyone talked a great deal about the American announcement to use force
to deliver food to starving people inside Zimbabwe. It was the only good news we had heard
and everyone was very excited about it and extremely pleased. At the same time, however,
everyone was very disgusted not only with our own government, especially our President, but
also the general despondency of people here who don’t want to get involved in the Zimbabwe
issue even though we all know it will affect us. Nevertheless, we all encouraged each other
and tried to lift each other’s spirits to continue on with the struggle.

I met some women who were extremely concerned by the slaughter of wildlife in Zimbabwe.
60% of its wildlife has been wiped out in two years. They told me, that it is expected
that within 6 weeks all the wild life on private game farms will be wiped out – completely –
and then the hungry blacks will be forced to eat the remaining animals in the national
parks. Zimbabwe is facing an ecological disaster of unimaginable proportions. The ladies
told me how extremely difficult it was, even in South Africa, to get radio and TV coverage
of this disaster, and they showed me photos of elephants and other wildlife which had been
killed. They were rather despondent, and we all tried to encourage each other to just
soldier on in the face of overwhelming odds.

All the Zimbabweans at that meeting were people who had fled for their lives. Most of them
were hoping they would not have to stay in South Africa for long. I did not have
the heart to tell them, that they might find themselves living here for a very long time to
come.

I will try to get more. A number of Zimbabweans in Johannesburg have told me that there is
a black Zimbabwean man in Johannesburg with photos of a horrific incident. Apparently
Mugabe’s people tied chord to a man’s genitals and then ripped them off. They say this
black man is only prepared to sell the photos for quite a sum of money. I will however
try to chase up these photos. There are also lots of photos of the destruction of wildlife
in Zimbabwe, and I will try to put those on the Internet at some time in the future.
