Nigeria: NUPENG Begins Strike

Lagos and Abuja – The Petroleum Tanker Drivers, a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG) yesterday commenced a nationwide strike.The strike, which was sequel to the federal government’s inability to meet the demands of the union is feared to have a negative impact on the nation’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has called on members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) to give dialogue a chance in the on-going dispute over the killing of its members, the seizure of its trucks and issues of the retrenchment of its members.

The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Engr. Austen Oniwon issued this plea in a release signed by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Levi Ajuonuma today.

The GMD appealed to parties in the dispute to consider the wider interest of Nigerians in this usually busy holiday season.

“I appeal to the tanker drivers to give the Federal Government an opportunity to resolve the matter and ensure that justice and fairness is done”.

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, had on Tuesday 9th November in Lagos, given the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, 7-days ultimatum to produce and bring to justice an alleged blood-thirsty soldier, who allegedly killed a Tanker Driver, Comrade Mohammed Saidu, on Saturday November 6, 2010, at a roadblock at the border between Bauchi and Plateau states or pay a N50 Million compensation to the family of late Saidu or face Fuel suspension from the Nation’s capital and Plateau state.

The National Chairman of PTD, Comrade Timothy Ogbu, who handed down the warning at a press conference also called on both COAS and CDS to order the immediate release of two tankers loaded with products seized by soldiers in Army Barracks in Port Harcourt and Ibadan for over a year.

JETFON on its part specifically asked the Federal government to consider $900billion bail out fund to JEPTON in the downstream of the oil and gas industry.

The Patron/Spokesman of the Association, Mr.Peter Akptason, said the action of some banks in the country has stifle the members operation, adding that if not well handled the development may launch the country into another round of fuel crisis.

LEADERSHIP checks in some Depots in lagos shows that there was no loading activities in Capital Oil, MRS. Obat and De jones.

Also our reporter who went round the nations capital yesterday reports that long fuel queues has resurfaced in most filling stations across the FCT.

A source at an NNPC mega station in Central Area, who preferred anonymity explained that the situation might go out of hand if the strike is not called off immediately..
