Bullets fly in foiled cash-in-transit heist

I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Bullets from semi-automatic machineguns whizzed through the air but, thanks to some quick -thinkers, nobody was hit.

The scene of battle was a shopping centre in Eersterus where a gang of 15 heavily armed robbers on Friday tried to ambush a cash-in-transit van.

Armed to the teeth, the suspects – several of whom were wearing bullet-proof vests – cornered two SBV guards as they prepared to load cash into an ATM.

They disarmed the guards before firing indiscriminately.

‘I just prayed. All I could do was pray’

One of the guards gave them the slip and got back in the van while railway policeman Solomon Maroetsi, who was off duty at the time, distracted the gunmen.

The actions of these two heroes, according to witnesses, undoubtedly saved lives.

Maroetsi, who was with his wife at the time, had used the ATM and returned to his car.

That was when he saw an armed man grab one of the guards and heard shots.

He pushed his wife into the car and took cover behind it to draw his gun. In the confusion which followed the guard escaped and ran for cover but the gunman then turned on Maroetsi and ordered him to lie on the ground.

‘click, click’

His wife, cowering in the car, watched in terror as the robber stood on Maroetsi’s back, disarmed him, and held the gun to the back of his head.

“I just prayed. All I could do was pray,” she said.

But the gun jammed and Maroetsi said he heard “click, click” and knew it was not his time.

At the same time, the guard in the van realised the need to do something and revved the engine to distract the rest of the gang.

He drove towards them repeatedly before driving off to a nearby police station.

“Every time they (the robbers) jumped out of the way he drove at them again.

“They were shooting at him, but he did not give up,” businessman Carl Reid said.

“He just kept at it until he was out of the centre with the robbers chasing after him.”

Reid said the guard in the van and the brave police officer had done more than those called to the scene and, undoubtedly, saved lives.

He claimed when he called 10111 he was told to “be patient”.

“If it had not been for them people would be dead,” he said.

Police responding to the attack spotted the gunmen’s getaway vehicles, a Ford Mondeo, and gave chase cornering two of them in Mamelodi. Eersterus police station spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said two of the suspects and their getaway car were found in Mamelodi, while a second getaway vehicle was found abandoned outside Eersterus.

“Two LM5 semi-automatic rifles, an LM4 semi-automatic rifle and two pistols were found under the seats of the car recovered in Mamelodi while found four rifle magazines, 95 R4 rifle bullets and 15 9mm rounds were discovered inside the car recovered near Eersterus,” he added.
