[Sickening stuff. Jan] A Durban man made a gruesome find when he discovered the body of his 12-year-old sister in dense bush in Bonella, near Chesterville, on Monday. She had been stabbed seven times. She was killed while out playing with her friend. Police have not excluded the possibility that little Samkelisiwe Tabhu may also have been raped. “She and her friend asked me if they could go out to play,” Tabhu said. “I told them they could, but told her that she needed to return early because we were going out. “She said a coloured man had given them R10 and asked them to get mangoes for him. She (Samkelisiwe) disappeared with him. “We went out looking for her. We approached a dense bush and we started shouting for her, but she never answered. “I called the police. Her friend identified the man she was last seen with. We started fighting because he wouldn’t tell me where she was. “The police arrived and we started searching in thick bush. I found her body next to a tree.” The knife that was used to kill her was found next to her. “My whole world came crashing down. I couldn’t believe that someone had taken my little sister’s life away. “I don’t understand why he did it. I’ve seen him around, but I would never have thought that he would do something like this,” Tabhu said. “She was such a quiet, respectful girl. The neighbourhood kids loved her. They were always in our yard to watch her sing and dance.” Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe said a 28-year-old man had been arrested. “We arrested the man at his place of work in Durban North. We have charged him with murder. We suspect that he may also have raped the girl.” Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Estcourt man who raped and sodomised his 9-year-old stepsister was sentenced to 21 years’ imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday. Judge Thumba Pillay found that there were substantial and compelling circumstances which allowed him to deviate from the mandatory life sentence for the rape of a child under 16.
